LML (Lohia Machinery Limited) used to be one of India’s most popular two-wheeler brands in the 90s & early 2000. The Kanpur-based automaker had a partnership with Piaggio and their scooter, the LML Vespa was a big hit amongst consumers. Other scooters manufactured and sold by the company included the LML Select, Supremo & Sensation. The company also sold motorcycles including Adreno, Energy & the moderately successful LML Freedom. Shortly afterwards, the company started facing financial difficulties and went into insolvency in 2018. In 2021, Yogesh Bhatia-led SG Corporate Mobility acquired the LML brand from the erstwhile promoters, the Singhania family. SG Corporate also owns ‘Detel’, a brand involved in light electric two-wheelers. Both Detel & LML will exist as two separate entities.
As most EV enthusiasts would’ve known by now, LML is all set to make a comeback in the Indian automobile market in an electric avatar. The company recently showcased an electric scooter named LML Star at the 2023 Auto Expo. Bookings for this electric scooter have begun. The company claims the Star will offer ‘unprecedented range, class-leading speed, and advanced technology that a rider can ever think of’.
LML will also launch two more products: an electric dirt bike named Moonshot & an e-bike named Orion.
LML Electric will adopt a swappable battery model for all its products.
LML has partnered with Saera Electric, an e-rickshaw & electric two-wheeler manufacturing company. Saera purchased the production facility of Harley Davidson in Haryana. This facility will manufacture the upcoming LML electric two-wheelers. However, the company is also exploring to set up its own manufacturing plant. LML aims to make EVs totally in India and also explore overseas avenues for export. The company has also partnered with Germany-based ‘eROCKIT’, a light electric two-wheeler manufacturer. It was reported that the German company will provide the core technology for the development of LML electric two-wheelers, but company CEO Yogesh Bhatia stated that these products will be re-engineered as per Indian conditions.

LML used to be a household name and now, just the mention of LML brings in loads of nostalgia. The company leadership also stated that LML is not just a two-wheeler but an ‘emotion’. It will be interesting to see how the new owners lead LML in the electric vehicle market.
