After showcasing it at the 2023 Auto Expo, MG has finally launched the Comet EV in India.

Comet EV

This is the company’s second electric car and the country’s most affordable one. Priced at Rs 7.98 lakh (ex-showroom), the electric hatchback is based on the Wuling Air EV (Wuling is MG’s sister brand).

The Comet will be manufactured at MG’s plant in Halol, Gujarat.

The Comet EV features a 17.3 kWh battery pack which gives a range of 230 km. The battery for the Comet has been sourced from Tata Autocomp and is IP67-rated.

This micro electric hatchback is a two-door, four-seater car with a boxy design. One must get in from the front door by using one-touch reclining passenger seats for second-row entry. When it comes to size, the MG Comet is even more compact than the Tata Nano. The Comet EV sports 12-inch alloy wheels, the smallest on any car in India.

The electric car will be available in five colours.

The company is offering a number of ‘funky’ body wraps and stickers to decorate your car as you see fit and make it ‘instagram-worthy’. The car has white & grey interiors and two 10.25-inch screens, one for the infotainment system and the other for the driver.

Other features include keyless entry, leather-covered two-spoke steering wheel, steering-mounted controls, tyre pressure monitoring system (TPMS), reverse camera & sensors, all-LED lights and impact-sensing door unlock.

Another highlight of the car is that there is no start-stop button for ignition. To start the car, the brake pedal needs to be depressed twice!

MG is also offering a 3.3 kW onboard charger that takes 7 hours to fully charge the battery. On the downside, the Comet does not get fast-charging.

The MG Comet EV is a micro hatchback and will take on the Tata Tiago EV (the Comet undercuts the Tiago EV’s price by Rs 71,000) and the Citroen eC3.

Rs 7.98 lakh is the introductory price for the car. Prices for more variants will be announced soon.

FYI, prices for the recently launched electric vehicles Tiago EV & eC3 start at Rs 8.69 lakh & Rs 11.50 lakh, respectively.

The Comet EV will be available for test drives from April 27. Bookings open on May 15.

Conclusion:

The Comet EV has given a new dimension to India’s Electric Vehicle story. The micro hatchback is targeted towards people who are looking for a city car. However, it received mixed responses on social media.

Nevertheless, the car is an exciting prospect and if it succeeds, we might see more such micro cars in the Indian electric vehicle market.
