Tata Motors has strengthened its electric car portfolio with the launch of the Curvv EV.

Tata Nexon EV

Before it’s launch, there were speculations that the Curvv EV may feature the same specifications as the Nexon with a coupe-like curvy shape. But that isn’t true. There are many things that differentiate the Curvv EV and the Nexon EV. They have different battery capacities, cell structure, power rating & features. Here EVJoints brings you a comparison between the two to help decide the right car for you:

Battery & Range:

Tata Curvv EV comes in 2 battery options: 45 kWh & 55 kWh. The Curvv EV’s 45 kWh variant offers a range of 430 km. The 55 kWh variant offers a range of 502 km.

The Tata Nexon EV comes in 3 battery options: 30 kWh, 40.5 kWh & 45 kWh. The Nexon EV’s 30 kWh variant offers a range of 275 km. The 40.5 kWh variant offers a range of 390 km. The 45 kWh variant offers a range of 489 km. Tata Motors has branded the 30 kWh variant as Tata Nexon EV MR (medium range), the 40.5 kWh variant as Nexon EV LR (long range) and the 45 kWh variant as Nexon EV 45.

The Curvv EV’s higher battery capacity and prismatic cell structure gives it a better range and an edge over the Nexon EV.

(Both the Curvv EV & Nexon EV come with 8 year battery warranty.)

EV Charging:

With a 7 kW AC charger, the Curvv 45 kWh battery variant can go from 10-100% in 6.5 hours and the 55 kWh variant can do the same in 7.9 hours. Using a 60 kW DC fast charger, the Curvv 45 kWh variant can go from 10-80% in 40 minutes. Using a 70 kW DC fast charger, the 55 kWh variant can do the same in 40 minutes.

With a 7 kW AC charger, the Nexon 30 kWh battery variant can go from 10-100% in 4.3 hours, the 40.5 kWh variant can do the same in 6 hours and the 45 kWh variant takes 6.5 hours. Using a 50 kW DC fast charger, the 30 kWh & 40.5 kWh variants can go from 10-80% in 56 minutes. Using a 60 kW DC fast charger, the 45 kWh variant can do the same in 40 minutes.

To simplify the above, we have presented the data in a tabulated format below:

A big differentiator between the two cars is EV charging capacity. While the Nexon EV’s charging capacity is limited to 30 kW, the Curvv supports 70 kW. This, along with the bigger battery, is a game changer. Learn more about how to choose the right EV charging station for your electric car: Battery & charging capacity

Pricing:

Prices for the Curvv EV 45 kWh battery variant start at Rs 17.49 lakh. For the 55 kWh variant, prices start at Rs 19.25 lakh.

Prices for the Nexon EV 30 kWh battery variant start at Rs 12.49 lakh. For the 40.5 kWh variant, prices start at Rs 14.59 lakh. For the 45 kWh variant, prices start at Rs 13.99 lakh.

Design & Features:

When it comes to looks, the Curvv EV wins (rather easily). The Curvv’s main attraction is its unique coupe roofline which gives it a sporty look. Coupe SUV is a design which has been deployed by luxury automakers so far. Tata Motors bringing this in the mass market segment is a first. The Tata Nexon EV features more of a conventional compact SUV look. Major differentiators:

  • The Curvv EV gets flush-fitting door handles, while the Nexon features conventional door handles.
  • The Tata Curvv EV rides on 18-inch alloys while the Nexon EV has 16-inch alloy wheels.
  • The Curvv gets panoramic sunroof while the Nexon features single-pane sunroof.
  • In the front, the Curvv gets the full-width LED light, whereas the Nexon features regular LEDs on the edges of its face.
  • The Curvv and Nexon look completely different from the back.

Conclusion:

The Tata Curvv EV certainly feels like an upgrade when compared to the Nexon EV. Auto experts say that Tata’s decision to launch the Curvv will affect the Nexon’s sales. If budget is a big factor, go for the Nexon EV. But if you can stretch your budget a bit, go for the Curvv EV.
