Electric vehicles are indeed gaining popularity, yet many individuals still wonder about their functionality. Common queries include whether EVs have an engine or gears. Given that EVs are still emerging, it’s crucial to address these questions and promote EV adoption. By doing so, we not only contribute to India’s leadership in the global EV landscape but also foster a more sustainable future. Below, I provide answers to five intriguing questions that frequently arise in EV discussions.

  1. Does an EV have an engine?

Unlike conventional vehicles that use an internal combustion engine, EVs are powered by an electric motor. This motor uses electricity stored in the vehicle’s battery to generate the power needed to drive the wheels. When you press the accelerator, electricity flows from the battery to the motor, making it spin and move the car.

Does an EV have an engine

So, in a way, the electric motor in an EV performs the same function as an engine in a conventional car, but it does so use a completely different technology. Plus, EVs are silent, making for a peaceful driving experience. To know more in detail, read our detailed blog on Why Electric Vehicles don’t have an Engine & Gears?

  1. Do EV cars have engine oil?

Engine oil is a crucial component in a conventional car. It lubricates the engine’s moving parts, reduces friction, prevents overheating, and helps keep the engine clean.

Do EV cars have engine oil

However, electric vehicles don’t have an internal combustion engine, and therefore, they don’t need engine oil. The electric motor in an EV has far fewer moving parts than a conventional engine, which means there’s less need for lubrication. Some EVs do have gearboxes, and these may require lubrication, but this is a far cry from the regular oil changes needed by conventional vehicles. This leads to a low maintenance cost for EVs.

  1. Do electric cars have gears or a transmission?

Most electric cars have a single-speed transmission. This is because an electric motor delivers its maximum torque at zero RPM and has a very large RPM range. This means that unlike a conventional car, an EV doesn’t need to shift gears to keep the engine in its optimal power band. The single-speed transmission in an EV is much simpler, more efficient, and requires less maintenance than a conventional multi-speed transmission. 1. Is it possible to drive an EV without using a clutch?

Yes, you can drive an EV without a clutch. In fact, one of the things that many people appreciate about driving an EV is its simplicity. Without a multi-speed transmission, there’s no need for a clutch. When you want to drive an EV, you simply select “Drive” on the control panel, and off you go. There’s no need to worry about stalling the engine or shifting gears, which makes driving an EV a very different experience from driving a conventional car.

  1. Do EVs need to be charged every day?

This is a common question and the answer depends on how much you drive. Most new EVs in India have a range of at least 300 kms, and many can go much further on a single charge. If your daily driving needs are less than your car’s range, then you won’t need to charge every day.

Do EVs need to be charged every day

However, many people find it convenient to plug in their EV each night, just like they do with their mobile phone. That way, they start each day with a full charge. This is made even easier with a home charger, which can be installed in your garage or driveway.

In conclusion, while EVs may seem complex, they’re actually quite simple and straightforward to understand. They represent a significant shift from the traditional internal combustion engine vehicles we’re all used to, but as we’ve seen, that’s not a bad thing. In fact, it’s a big part of what makes EVs so exciting and promising for the future.
