Tesla has officially entered the Indian market with the launch of its first showroom in Mumbai. And Tesla’s first offering in India is the crossover electric SUV, the Model Y. The Tesla Model Y was the world’s best selling electric car in 2023 & 2024.

After Mumbai, Tesla plans to open its next showroom in Delhi.

In this blog, EVJoints brings you an in-depth analysis of Tesla Model Y’s battery, range, charging options and lots more:

Battery & Range:

Although Tesla hasn’t officially announced the battery specifications of the India-bound Model Y, internationally, the car features 63 kWh & 83 kWh batteries. So, it is being assumed by everyone that these are the capacities of the batteries being offered in India. The 63 kWh variant gets LFP battery while the 83 kWh long range variant gets NMC battery.

Tesla is offering two variants of the Model Y in India: a rear-wheel drive (RWD) variant (with 63 kWh battery) and a long range RWD variant (with 83 kWh battery). The Standard RWD variant has a claimed range of up to 500 km, and the long range variant has a range of 622 km. Read more about the different types of EV drivetrains.

Tesla is offering an 8-year warranty on the Model Y’s battery.

Charging Time, Speed & Compatible Chargers:

Tesla claims its Long Range variant battery (83 kWh) can be juiced up to 267 km of range in just 15 minutes using its Supercharger (which has a charging capacity of 250 kWh). Tesla will set-up 16 Superchargers in India shortly, with the first 8 coming up in & around Mumbai, and the next 8 in & around Delhi. These will be the company’s fourth gen ‘V4’ chargers which feature longer cables, credit card payment slots and increased power output. (V4 Superchargers are capable of delivering up to 325 kW, a 30% increase over V3’s 250kW).

The Model Y uses a CCS2 plug in India. This makes it compatible with the existing EV charging infrastructure in the country.

The Tesla Model Y will come with an 11.2 kW AC home charger. These home chargers can provide up to 70 km of range per hour of charge.

The front row of the Tesla Model Y comes with heated, ventilated recliner seats. The car features a 15.4 inch infotainment touchscreen in the front. Other features include heated rear seats, a 9 speaker audio system, rear AC vents, 8 exterior cameras (for ADAS), panoramic glass roof, connected car tech, heated steering & windshield, a dashcam and an 8-inch rear touchscreen. The second row can be folded electronically via the 8-inch screen. Also, the panoramic glass roof is tinted so it doesn’t warm up the cabin. The car gets ‘double-glazed acoustic glass’ windows to ensure the cabin remains as silent as possible.

The Tesla Model Y in India comes with Level 2 ADAS features, with an optional Full Self-Driving (Supervised) package available for an additional Rs 6 lakh. This Full Self-Driving (Supervised) feature allows for more autonomous driving capabilities with driver supervision, while the standard ADAS includes features like lane departure warning & forward collision warning. However, Tesla states that some autonomous features will not be activated yet in India as they require regulatory approvals in specific regions.

Pricing:

The two variants of the Model Y are priced at Rs 59.89 lakh & Rs 67.89 lakh.

Competitors:

In the Indian market, the Tesla Model Y will compete against other premium electric cars, like the Mercedes-Benz EQB, BMW iX1, Volvo EC40, Kia EV6 and BYD SEALION 7.

Conclusion:

Tesla is the biggest EV company in the world, and its entry in India is a big milestone for our EV industry. The company’s entry will help expand India’s EV ecosystem by boosting people’s confidence in EVs as a category. And its cars, often called the iPhones of the auto industry, are sheer class.
