While the western world has whole-heartedly made the shift to electric vehicles, India is just starting to understand and appreciate the potential of EVs. Tata Motors is dominating the Indian electric car market and other automakers are launching or planning to launch their electric cars in India. There are a number of electric cars on the horizon.

The electric car market in India broadly features luxury cars, affordable luxury cars and mass-market electric cars. But as is the case with Indian consumers, the cars belonging to the mass-market segment are ruling the market with Tata Nexon EV & Tigor EV capturing more than 70% of the electric car market share. Let’s have a look at the top 5 electric cars in the Indian market:

  1.   Tata Nexon EV

The Tata Nexon EV has recently been renamed as the ‘Tata Nexon EV Prime’. The Nexon EV Prime has a 30.2 kWh battery which offers a 312 km range. The car accelerates from 0-60 km/hr in 4.6 seconds. Features include automatic climate control, 7-inch infotainment touchscreen and 350 litre boot space. Tata Motors offers an 8 year warranty on the car’s battery. The car has a 5 star crash safety rating. Prices start from Rs 14.99 lakh.

  1.   MG ZS EV

The MG ZS EV has a 50.3 kWh battery which offers a 461 km range. The electric SUV packs an impressive 448 litre boot space. The car has a 5 star crash safety rating and top features include a panoramic sunroof, rear AC vents, a 10.1-inch infotainment screen, a 7-inch LCD screen behind the steering wheel and a push start/stop button. Prices start from Rs 22.58 lakh.

  1.   Tata Tigor EV

The Tigor EV has a 26 kWh battery which offers a range of 315 km. The company claims the Tigor EV can accelerate from 0-60 km/hr in 5.7 seconds. The electric sedan from Tata Motors has a 310 litre boot space. Features include push button start/stop, automatic climate control and a 7-inch infotainment touchscreen. The car has a 4 star crash safety rating. Tata Motors offers an 8 year warranty on the battery. Prices start from Rs 12.49 lakh.

  1.   Tata Tiago EV

Tata Motors’ latest electric offering is the Tiago EV. The electric hatchback is offered in two battery pack options: 19.2 kWh & 24 kWh. The smaller version offers a range of 250 km, while the bigger battery version offers a range of 315 km. It sports a 7-inch infotainment touchscreen. The car has a 4 star crash safety rating. Tata Motors offers an 8 year warranty on the battery. Prices start from Rs 8.49 lakh.

  1.   Kia EV6

Kia’s first electric car in the Indian market is also the company’s global flagship electric car: the EV6. The car sports a 77.4 kWh battery pack which offers an impressive range of 528 km. Features include a 12.3-inch curved touchscreen, 14-speaker sound system, 8 airbags and a wide electric sunroof.Prices start from Rs 59.95 lakh. At present, the Kia EV6 is being imported to India. The company plans to start making it locally 2025 onwards.
