Tata Motors has dominated India’s electric car market in a very convincing manner. The automaker’s Nexon EV is the country’s best-selling electric car. Apart from the Nexon EV, the company’s other two electric offerings, the Tigor EV & the Tiago EV have also been received well. And when it comes to EV charging infrastructure, group company Tata Power is the leading player in the sector. Together with Tata Motors, Tata Power and auto equipment & battery supplier Tata AutoComp, the Tata Group has single-handedly spearheaded India’s EV revolution!
Now, Tata Motors has a bunch of new electric cars lined-up for launch in the next 2 years. The company is expecting around 50% of its overall car sales in India to come from its upcoming EVs. Let’s have a look at these forthcoming electric cars:
Tata Punch EV: (expected launch Diwali 2023)
Tata Motors is planning to launch the electric car around Diwali 2023. A test mule of the upcoming Punch EV was recently spotted on Indian roads. In terms of design, the upcoming Tata Punch EV largely resembles its ICE version. The Punch EV is expected to get a 25 kWh battery pack and offer a driving range of around 250 to 300 km. However, at this stage, these are just speculations. It should get fast-charging capabilities as well. The car is expected to be priced at around Rs 10-12 lakh (in the same price bracket as the Tiago EV hatchback). Tata Motors will promote it as the most affordable electric SUV in the country. The Tata Punch EV will primarily compete with the Citroen eC3. Tata Motors may also offer multiple battery pack options to cater to a wider audience. Some of its key features will include a new two-spoke flat-bottom steering wheel, a 360-degree parking camera and all four disc brakes.
Tata Altroz EV: (expected launch Q1 2024)
Tata Motors is planning to launch the Altroz EV in early 2024 and it is expected to be priced around Rs 12 lakh. The premium hatchback is likely to feature a 30.2 kWh battery, which is being used in the Tata Nexon Prime EV and Tigor EV. The Altroz will have fast-charging capabilities. The exterior design of the Altroz EV will be similar to the conventional Altroz. The only cosmetic change: addition of electric blue accents all around the car body.
Tata Harrier EV: (expected launch 2024)
Tata Harrier EV is an upcoming 5-seater electric SUV. The car is being developed in collaboration with Tata Group company Jaguar Land Rover and shares the Range Rover architecture. Tata Motors had showcased the Harrier EV at the 2023 Auto Expo and it is expected to hit the markets next year. The electric SUV is expected to sport a 60 kWh battery pack with a range of 500 km. The Harrier EV will get vehicle-to-load (V2L) and vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) charging capabilities. (V2L is a way to transfer energy stored in the EV’s battery to power electronics and other devices. V2V is a way to transfer energy to another EV).
Expected price is between Rs 22-27 lakhs.
Tata Safari EV: (expected launch 2024)
Tata Motors has begun testing the Safari EV recently. A Land Rover-derived platform underpins the Tata Harrier EV and Tata Safari EV. The new platform will accommodate a battery pack larger than the one present in the Nexon EV. Rumours suggest that the battery pack could be around 60 kWh and give a range of up to 500 km. The Tata Safari EV is expected to offer a variety of hi-tech features.
Tata Curvv EV: (expected launch 2024)
Tata Motors showcased the new Tata Curvv EV at the 2023 Auto Expo. The company is positioning the Curvv as a mid-size electric SUV with a coupe stance. Tata Motors has stated that the Curvv will go on sale as an EV first, followed by petrol & diesel variants later. Recently, it was rumoured that the Curvv is being renamed as Tata Frest EV.
Tata Sierra EV: (expected launch 2025)
Tata Motors is reviving one of its iconic brands, the Sierra. It is taking rebirth as an electric SUV and the company showcased the Sierra at the 2023 Auto Expo. The EV generated a lot of buzz due to its uniquely unconventional design. The Sierra EV is expected to be launched in 2025. According to reports, the Tata Sierra EV might get a 60 kWh battery pack and offer a range of around 500 km.
Tata Avinya EV: (expected launch 2025)
Avinya is a Sanskrit word which means ‘Innovation’. Tata Motors claims this electric car will be a path-breaking electric car for India. It is likely to be launched in 2025. The Avinya EV combines ‘the luxuries & versatility of an SUV and the roominess & functionality of an MPV.’ The futuristic electric car will also feature butterfly doors. The expected battery pack will support ultra-fast charging capabilities, which will be able to provide 500 km range in under 30 minutes.

At the moment, the company leads this race by a mile and going by its plans, it is likely to continue with the momentum.
