Most of us are well-aware of Formula 1, which is the world’s most popular form of car racing. Like ICC is the governing body for cricket, FIFA is the governing body for football, similarly FIA is the governing body for car racing. In 2011, the FIA presented the idea of ‘Formula E’, which involved car racing similar to Formula 1, but instead of being fuel-powered, the cars are powered by electricity.
Today, Formula E is a single-seater electric car racing championship series. Eleven teams with two drivers each contest in races that are held in different cities around the world. The current FIA Formula E season is the 9th year of the championship. This year there will be 16 races in the season and India will be hosting the 4th race in Hyderabad on 10-11 February 2023. The race in Hyderabad is named ‘Hyderabad ePrix’ and it will be contested on the Hyderabad Street Circuit adjacent to the iconic Hussain Sagar Lake.
Formula E’s tagline is ‘More than just racing’. Its website states: “Formula E aspires to accelerate change towards an electric future, one race and one city at a time. Using the spectacle of world-class sport, we are sending a powerful and meaningful message to help alter perceptions and speed-up the switch to electric mobility.”
The city of Hyderabad will witness the ‘Hyderabad E-Mobility Week’ which is being organised by the state government of Telangana from February 5 to 11. The event will include an EV Expo, an EV rally and a lot more.
On February 5, an EV rally will be organised where EV enthusiasts will be riding their electric two-wheelers & electric cars, to spread the message of sustainable mobility.
On February 8, the EV Expo, named ‘Hyderabad E-Motor Show 2023’, will be held at the Hitex Exhibition Centre. The show will witness the launch of many electric vehicles by established automobile companies as well as startups.
While Mahindra will be showcasing an electric sports car ‘Pininfarina Battista’, Citroen India will be launching its electric hatchback ‘Citroen eC3’. Two startups: Quantum Energy & Gravton Motors will be launching their electric two-wheelers. The expo will also see the launch of a rather unique product: an electric skateboard! The event will also see EV charging companies showcase their chargers.
On February 10 & 11, the city will be hosting the first-ever Formula E race in India.
Although there are no Indian drivers in the Formula E Championship, there is a motor racing team which represents India. Mahindra Racing has been competing in the championship since the inaugural season in 2014.
